Michael Hitschold is a contemporary German sculptor whose art is dedicated to triggering a cognitive process in the viewer. His work aims to open doors, break and transcend boundaries of space and time, and challenge conventional ideas. Engaging in a kind of alchemical process, Hitschold binds the sounds of higher worlds into steel while laboring over the fire. The resulting sculptures are spatially linear, architectural, crystalline sequences—capturing snapshots of gestures reminiscent of dance and embodying grace in the light of eternity.
Born in Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1970, Hitschold spent his formative years in Coburg. His journey into the world of metal design began with training in Dresden and Berlin, including periods at the Akademie der Künste in Berlin. Subsequent study trips to North America, South America, and South Africa laid the foundational inspiration for his artistic endeavors.
In 2001, Hitschold settled in Saxony-Anhalt, establishing a forge where he meticulously crafted forms. In 2019, he relocated to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where he continues his artistic pursuits in his studio. Hitschold's work reflects a profound exploration of materials and concepts, inviting viewers to engage in a contemplative experience that transcends the boundaries of the ordinary.
