Mauro Vaccai is a contemporary Italian sculptor. Vaccai carves stone, and today his creations can be found all over the world. He completes the entire process by hand, beginning with drafting and continuing with carving, chiseling, and polishing to turn a block of marble into a work of art. He used the conventional method of a hammer and chisel. His choice of white marble blocks comes from the Carrara quarries in the Apuan Alps, which are renowned for producing the most expensive marble in the world. He also gathers stones from the Ombrone River, which runs through the valley between Piteccio and Castagno. Then, as a ritual gesture to focus and find inspiration, he makes the sign of the cross before beginning every new work.
He has participated in numerous fairs and exhibitions, and his works can be found in museums all over the world, from New York (San Martino, Garibaldi-Meucci Museum, 2001) to Asnières-sur-Oise, France (Unione, 2003), to Traun, Austria (Testa di horse, 2006) and the Italians Nonantola (Ingranaggi di luce, 2010) and Napoli (Deposition, church of Santa Chiara, 2010). In 2017, the Italian Navy requested an 800 kg marble sculpture from him for the port of Lampedusa to recognize the islanders' assistance with the refugees who were coming there. Pope Francis himself blessed the sculpture in the Vatican City.
Mauro Vaccai was born in 1954, in Italy.
