Mathilde Lâm is a Belgian artist with Vietnamese, Chinese and Belgian roots. The cultures as well as her womanhood influence her work.
Mathilde Lâm is an artist whose work is deeply rooted in her search for her own heritage and identity as a half-Asian person. She draws inspiration from Taoism and explores the balance between nature and humanity, symbolizing the harmony that unites the east and west.
Her focus lies on humanizing mainly Asian women, who are often stereotyped as weak or hypersexualized objects. Lâm's paintings portray women who are in harmony with nature and their origins, symbolizing a strong connection between women and the natural world.
Through her art, Lâm confronts societal pressures and expectations placed on women, particularly those built on the male gaze. Her figures often have worn-out glances, covering clothes, and staring faces, challenging those who dehumanize and objectify them.
As an artist, Lâm draws from her own subconsciousness and experiences, as well as the experiences of women around the world. Her work serves as a commentary on the intersection of identity, culture, and gender, and the ways in which they are perceived and represented in contemporary society.
