Martin James – Artist
Martin was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK in 1959 and moved to Sydney, Australia
at the age of 10 where he has lived ever since.
Martin painted a few pictures at high school but was discouraged from continuing
and did not pursue the study or appreciation of art upon leaving school. He did however pursue music and became an accomplished guitarist, songwriter and recording producer
working professionally in the music industry.
It was not until the age of 36 when Martin as a father of three came home from the local library with a learn to paint and draw video for his children. Well the kids had a quick scribble but Dad’s taking this seriously. Three years later in 1999 Martin exhibited a number of exploratory drawings and paintings at the Café Gallery in Sydney ( 15 of which were sold) and followed that up with another successful exhibition in the following year.
His style was initially influenced by a visit to the ‘Fauves Exhibition” at NSW Art Gallery where he fell in love with oil painting and colour. He uses colour vividly in crayon, pastel and oil paint to produce landscapes, still lifes and an imaginative mixture
of figure and mindscape.
