_a work in progress_ beginning 2008
The starting point for my photographic work is the question of reality.
For millennia we have questioned the extent to which we can rely on our perceptions, where the line between imagination, dreams and the real, objective world is drawn.
This border is the exciting thing, the border between the real and the unreal world.
Each of our perceptions are subjective.
Our sensory organs only respond to specific frequency ranges, and when two people look at the same color that objectively reflects a certain frequency spectrum, each of them has a different perception of that color.
Plato already recognized the impossibility of perceiving an objectively comparable external reality based on our sensory impressions. Described very vividly in his allegory of the cave.
There is no objective imaging, there is only light and shadow that creates different images depending on the viewing location.
With regard to time, too, no picture reflects an objective point in time, even an 8000th of a second is a period of time.
Our eyes have limited resolution, as does every lens and recording medium.
Every enlargement eventually brings a blur. Maximum blur is encountered at maximum magnification.
The starting point for my work are film sets that I have developed over many years as a set designer.
My pictures are photographic snapshots of these staged film spaces.
What I would like to bring to the outside world are atmospherically condensed traces of these stays.
The compression of space to light and shadow.

Manuela Freigang is a woman artist photographer born in 1965 also practicing collage. She tries to bring out the extremes and limit the stories to the essentials. She tries to avoid repetitions, because she is always looking for the "unexplored".
Each project has its own secret, requires its own language and its own form. That's what she tries to decipher every time. This is his artistic starting point and his passion. His works include C-Prints, painting, collages, objects and spatial installations.
Having grown up in Leipzig (Germany), she lives in Vienna (Austria) and works internationally on various theater and film projects, as well as exhibitions in public space.
In Leipzig, she completed preparatory studies in painting at the College of Graphics and Book Art, and in Vienna she studied scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts, where she obtained a Master of Arts. After her studies in Vienna, she established herself as a freelance artist.
Since 2008 she has been working on the series "Metaphysik of Space". In these works, she develops abstract "spaces of light", which have taken the form of installations, large-scale photographs, collages and paintings.
