C'est incroyable de voir les jeunes hirondelles prêtes à l'envol qui s'agglutinent tant bien que mal dans le nid. A se demander si ce dernier va pouvoir soutenir encore longtemps tout ce petit monde !
Les hirondelles de cheminées nichent en colonie dans les espaces clos comme les garages, les granges ou encore sous les ponts. Sa longue queue fourchue la distingue de l'hirondelle des fenêtres. Son masque rouge est également très distinctif. Lorsqu'elle est posée, ses longues ailes font penser au martinet noir, un autre passereau migrateur, un peu plus grand que les Hirundo rustica (l'hirondelle rustique, l'autre nom de notre modèle).
Bien présente dans tout l'hémisphère nord pour sa nidification et l'hémisphère sud pour son hivernage. Sa population mondiale est estimée à 190 millions d'individus. En France, elle a diminué de 43 % en 10 ans d'après une étude de 2016 de la Ligue de Protection des Oiseaux et il y est interdit de la détruire, la mutiler, la capturer ou l'enlever, de la perturber intentionnellement ou de la naturaliser ; de détruire ou enlever les œufs et les nids par un arrêté ministériel du 17 avril 1981 relatif aux oiseaux protégés. Enfin, vivante ou morte, il est aussi interdit de la transporter, de la détenir en cage, de la vendre ou de l'acheter.
Mais il est tout à fait possible de l'admirer en train de voler dans le ciel de nos campagnes.
