Lou Hong is a contemporary Chinese sculptor whose artistic journey is deeply influenced by his experiences with a group of British Shorthair and Scottish Fold cats. Observing their graceful movements, playful antics, and serene moments of rest, Lou found reflections of human emotions in their behavior. The indifference and nobility of cats, contrasted with their playful and affectionate sides, inform his creative vision, encapsulating the calmness and majesty he perceives in their presence.
His inspiration extends beyond feline companions to encompass ancient art forms, including Egyptian, Assyrian, and the sculptures of the Han and Wei dynasties. Lou is captivated by the gold of the Pharaohs, the intricate wall carvings of Assyrian culture, and the pottery and statues from the Han and Wei periods, viewing these works as profound reflections of human life and the passage of time. He believes that the emotional essence of art is rooted in respect for history and a belief in its spiritual significance.
Through extensive engagement with antiquities, visits to museums, and scholarly readings, Lou has discovered the powerful spiritual energy embedded in these ancient objects. These experiences have enriched his artistic understanding and have significantly influenced his creative process. He asserts that the truth, goodness, and beauty of art emerge from the genuine expression of emotions and spiritual beliefs, emphasizing that only by conveying true feelings can lasting beauty be achieved.
In his recent work, Lou has increasingly focused on animal-themed creations, influenced by ancient sculptures. He explores spiritual wild animals as subjects, integrating elements of Egyptian decorative art and the stylistic features of ancient pottery. Guided by his college tutor’s philosophy of prioritizing emotional expression over structural rigidity, he seeks to vividly portray spiritual emotions without getting lost in technical details. Lou believes that strong and authentic emotions can more directly convey the essence of his subjects, advocating for a creative practice that values emotional depth over mere form.
Lou’s artistic preferences span ancient art from Egypt and Assyria to modernist sculpture, and he is fascinated by the contrasts between these styles. He recognizes that ancient works were often created for political or religious purposes, reflecting the desires for immortality among rulers and peaceful existence among ordinary people. These complex emotions are vividly expressed in the ancient artifacts that inspire him.
Recently, his creative focus has shifted toward abstract symbols and intentional sculptures, influenced by his design work. Lou has begun to merge traditional artistic methods with design principles, pursuing a spiritual visual experience in his creations. This evolution has allowed him to let go of strict formal constraints, embracing a more free and inspiration-driven creative state. Regardless of whether his work leans toward traditional modeling or abstract installation, he remains committed to the genuine expression of his innermost feelings. This ongoing creative journey brings him joy and fulfillment, underscoring his belief in the transformative power of art.
