The creative process of this Memento Mori was intertwined with a deeply introspective time in my life, making this painting truly special to me. I see it as a self-portrait, not a negative one, as I've always found skulls beautiful. They symbolise life, meaning, and eternity to me. [...]

Born in Paris, France, Laura Olenska showed an early interest for drawing and the language of colours. At a very young age, she found in an old cupboard a card game depicting famous paintings from renaissance to romanticism and discovered that a link between reality and her imaginary world was possible.

However, while Parisian life and Europe were a source of inspiration, Laura found her artistic home in the city of Wellington, New Zealand, in 2017. It was by being cut from the marvels of the past that she rediscovered her ability to give life to her inner world.

Greatly influenced by the wonders surrounding her in Europe, she is a self-taught artist with a background in art history, photography, and cinema. Her creative journey has been fueled by a passion for exploring the depths of human emotion and the mysteries of the past.

Laura is a versatile artist who draws inspiration from her own experiences and perspective on the world. Her work is diverse, yet it is bound together by the essence of her spirit.

Interested in psychoanalysis, Laura is deeply drawn to the enigmatic realm of human emotion and psyche, she is interested in the layers that lie beneath the surface. Inspired by artists like Caravaggio, Magritte, Botticelli, and Odilon Redon, she also finds endless inspiration in the French Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the streets of Rome, the gardens of Versailles, and the Belle Époque. Fantastical realms of fantasy art also influence her visions.

Her preferred mediums are oil paint and watercolour, though she occasionally engages in sculpture as well.

In her artistic practice, she prioritizes authenticity and genuineness. She creates not for an audience or social media validation, but to forge a sincere connection with the viewer. Each creation reflects her inner world.

Through her art, Laura Olenska aims to spark introspection, empathy, and a shared appreciation for the complexities of the human experience. By delving into the hidden faces of our emotions and psyche, she hopes to evoke a sense of wonder and connection that transcends time and culture.

Laura Olenska exclusively uses synthetic cruelty-free brushes.
