This is an original painting done entirely in encaustics on pieces of raw edge cherry wood. For this painting, there are 2 pieces of wood brought together at the horizon. Encaustic painting is a very old technique that involves color pigments melted into bees wax and resin. These "paints" are then applied in a molten state, and must be heated in order to manipulate. There are many layers. It is great fun! The finished painting will have rich texture and depth. The light plays off this texture, and can make the colors appear differently from different angles. Once complete, it is a durable surface. Just avoid placing it anywhere that is hotter than 165 degrees (good rule of thumb for anything, really :)

thanks for looking!

Welcome!

My work is inspired by nature; simply being outside and present in time. I aim to bring a part of that peace into my art. Texture, light and atmospheric quality are my obsessions; I strive for a small escape in each painting. I grew up in the mountains, went to college on the coast, and I love living in the Pacific Northwest of North America :) I am happiest when I am outside, and have been lucky to experience so many variations in the sky and earth.

A bit about Encaustics
I paint with encaustics. I limit myself to the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and black & white. I just really enjoy mixing colors from the basics :) Encaustic painting is an old technique that involves color pigments melted into bees wax and damar resin (sap). My palette is heated. There are many layers that must be fused together with heat as I paint. The finished painting will have rich texture and depth. The light plays off of this texture, and can make the colors appear differently from different angles. It is a durable material, and is stable to 170degrees F.
