John Atkinson Grimshaw was a 19th-century English painter, born in Leeds in 1836 and died in Knostrop in 1893.

He is best known for his paintings of nighttime cityscapes, which captured the 039;s foggy and mysterious atmosphere of the streets lit by the glow of gas street lights. Grimshaw's paintings often depict streets in Leeds, Glasgow and London, as well as harbor and maritime scenes.

Grimshaw began his career as a painter of portraits and rural landscapes, but c& It was from the 1870s that he focused on the nocturnal scenes for which he became famous. He often worked from photographs and used careful technique to render the details of light and shadow in his paintings.

Although Grimshaw's paintings were popular with the audience of his time, he struggled financially throughout his life and was forced to sell many works at prices below their value. After his death, however, appreciation for his work increased and he is now considered one of the great painters of 19th century England.
