Born in Belgium in 1956 under the sign of Aries, Johan grew up in East Flanders, the flat country sung by Jacques Brel, in a town house above his parents' tailor shop.
The family home is located on the banks of the Dendre, the river that gave its name to the city, Dendermonde, on the street "Franz Courtens", named after the native painter, spearhead of Impressionism and great teacher. The close neighbour then runs an art gallery and sells products for the visual arts.
Between art museums, historic buildings, the famous Honky Tonk Jazz Club and the great Ommegang of the giants and the Bayard horse classified by UNESCO as a world heritage site, Johan has been surrounded by art since his childhood and naturally finds himself a student at the Fine Arts School in his city.
Continuing on this path, he takes architecture courses in Ghent and in his second year builds his parents' last house, still considered to this day a modern architectural masterpiece.
He obtains his master's degree in architecture in 1979 and in 1981 the one for sustainable housing and humanitarian development. In 2007, Johan obtained French nationality.
Then began a long professional career as a researcher, teacher, designer, builder and humanitarian assistant on 5 continents, from Belgium to France via Algeria, Senegal, Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Thailand, Vietnam, China, Cuba, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Iraq and Haiti.
Having never stopped painting or drawing, his work is imbued with the various cultures discovered over the years and artistic encounters.
