Ma belle main décriture! (2022) Painting by Johanne Proulx

Johanne Proulx is a contemporary Canadian painter. She wants spontaneity, substantial gesture, and closeness with oneself and the viewer in her works on paper and canvas. Textures, such as the obvious trace left by a gouge on wood or a brush on canvas, are her favorites. In engraving, the colors are muted, whereas in painting, they are more vibrant. 

Proulx enjoys working with handmade papers that appeal to her; she enjoys sewing, painting, shredding, gluing, and appropriating them to tell a story. She favors strong colors now that the paint is taking up more space. Her tales are intimate, vulnerable, or forceful, often all at once.
