Johan Christian Claussen Dahl, also known as J. C. Dahl or I. C. Dahl, was a Danish-Norwegian painter who lived from February 24, 1788, to October 14, 1857. He is widely regarded as Norway's first great romantic painter, as the man who ushered in the country's "golden age" of painting, and as one of the greatest European artists of all time. People often refer to him as "the father of Norwegian landscape painting" because he was the first Norwegian painter to achieve a level of artistic mastery on par with the greatest European artists of his day. He also achieved international cultural recognition and fame for the first time. "J.C. Dahl occupies a central position in Norwegian artistic life of the first half of the 19th century," wrote one critic.
Dahl may have spent the majority of his life outside of Norway, but his devotion to his homeland shines through in the subjects he painted and the extraordinary work he did on behalf of Norwegian culture. For instance, he played an important role in the establishment of the Norwegian National Gallery and other major art institutions in Norway. He also played a role in the restoration of the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim and the Bergenhus Fortress.
