Jennifer Mattes is a contemporary German artist who lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Her artistic journey began with studies in film and video in Stuttgart, followed by further exploration in fine art and film under the mentorship of Harun Farocki and Constanze Ruhm at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna.
Working at the intersection of documentary, fictional, and performative processes, Mattes's oeuvre is distinguished by its multifaceted approach. Her works exhibit a layered image structure, incorporating techniques such as painting over and fragmentation, alongside the collage of found materials and specially created content in video art.
One of the hallmarks of Mattes's artistry is her adept weaving of humor and socially critical reflection, intertwining them to construct narratives that are simultaneously complex, emotional, and imbued with longing. Through her work, she invites viewers to engage with themes that resonate on both personal and societal levels, fostering a dialogue that prompts introspection and contemplation.
