Jean-Thomas Bédard is a contemporary artist, painter, filmmaker, and photographer originally from Lac-Saint-Jean, Quebec. He began painting at the age of 14, which led him to study at the École des Beaux-Arts de Montréal and later to the animation department of the National Film Board of Canada. He worked there for over 30 years as a director of animated films and documentaries. His animated short film L'Âge de Chaise – Chairmen won awards at several international festivals.

At the age of 32, Bédard embarked on a year-long trip around the world, where he immersed himself in photography. This experience culminated in an exhibition focused on traditional lifestyles in Central America, Oceania, and Indonesia, presented in Montreal and Toronto (York University). Throughout his career, he also exhibited his paintings in Montreal, Quebec, and Vancouver.

In 1985-86, Bédard worked as a trainer in animated cinema at the Centro Técnico e Audiovisual in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Upon returning to Quebec, he continued his career in documentary filmmaking with works such as La Traversée de la Nuit, Père pour la Vie, and Le Voyage Inachevé. His film career came to a pause in 2003.

Since 2011, Bédard has focused on photographic explorations of textures and colors drawn from nature, creating compositions that sometimes resemble abstract art, while also evoking a metaphorical and poetic universe. His main subject is the St. Lawrence River coastline at low tide, where he captures the ever-changing landscapes shaped by natural elements. He describes this process as "painting with the materials and colors" of the riverbanks, celebrating the beauty and cultural significance of the St. Lawrence.

In 2023, while continuing his work in composite photography, Bédard returned to drawing and watercolor through a collaboration with Ukrainian artist Alex Henk. Together, they co-create works in the spirit of abstract expressionism.
