Jean-Bernard Legendre is a contemporary French sculptor whose lifelong passion for metal has shaped his career, both artisanal and artistic.
With a scientific background, artistic expression is not do not leave. His biologist's view of natural forms largely influences his career as an artist. Between the abstract and the simplified figurative, his steel creations offer the vision of an imaginary Eden where plants and animals reinvent a world in the mixture of lines and curves.
The choice of Corten steel as a medium is posed as an alchemical decision. The hardness of this material contrasts with the design of a supple and organic nature. The search for textures and patinas is also part of this approach, or how to transform metal into wood, wear and tear over time, scars... Metal, through its shape and appearance, then embodies the transmutation of the inorganic into alive.
The thick sheet metal used for expression also allows the ambiguity of a sculpture that is both material and design. Almost invisible seen from the side and displaying its existence in space from the front.
Primitive influences are very present in the sculptor, because according to the artist to return to the original gentle nature, fertile or even dangerous, one must reincarnate in the first man. The one who placed his hand coated with pigment on the walls of a cave, amazed by the magic of having been able to double himself. The approach is identical here, it is indeed a question of placing on the metal a new world of nature to make it exist.
Through the themes addressed such as femininity, the balance between living and inert, confrontation, the mirror, fertility, the animal-plant mixture, Jean-Bernard Legendre takes a loving look at the living and continues his reflection on the nature of life.
This first collection, is already finding very exciting echoes among the first collectors through the first contemporary art fairs.
