Train paintings or railway paintings appear in the 19th century during the industrial revolution with the development of railway lines. These then carry with them a new imagination combining technology and travel through works where time seems to have been suspended. Stations, rails, locomotives, wagons, convoys ... are the motifs commonly represented in train paintings. But these can also focus on representing more intimate moments of life, such as the representation of passengers waiting for the train on the terminal platform, or observing the landscape through the glass of their vans ... Among the famous railway paintings we can cite The Last Spike by Thomas Hill, Le Night Train by Paul Delvaux or The irritating gentleman by Berthold Woltze.
