Hassan Laamirat is a contemporary Moroccan sculptor born in 1982. Known for his innovative use of recycled materials, Laamirat primarily works with metal parts sourced from Marrakech's scrap metal neighborhood. His sculptures are crafted from a variety of mechanical components, including pinions, chains, tool keys, locks, bearings, springs, bolts and nuts, ventilation grates, spark plugs, and even larger elements like shock absorbers, tank parts, and gas cylinders. These materials, originating from bicycles, motorbikes, cars, and ancient tools, are repurposed in his work.
Laamirat's art exemplifies true upcycling, as he transforms discarded mechanical parts into sculptures, often depicting animals. This process breathes new life into waste materials, creating unique and dynamic pieces. His artistic universe has expanded to include representations of prehistoric species, aliens, and robots inspired by science fiction films and comic books. Through his work, Laamirat not only showcases his creativity and technical skill but also emphasizes the importance of sustainability and reimagining waste.
