This newly created collection was inspired by my morning walks through the woods and neighborhoods near my home. I often feel compelled to just start clicking the shutter, but sometimes am not sure why exactly. I am starting to discover the why with this series of composites and color manipulation done in the post edit phase. I fine these images satisfying to create and a joy to look at and digest their unique qualities. Every image is thoughtfully and artfully crafted, and my mantra is, "Just because you can does not mean you should." It takes a lot of file space and time and energy to dig up the secrets our trees and nature hold dear, but it is worth the effort and I am proud to share them with you. Their surreal nature makes the viewer wonder what is hiding, and what is obvious, but also what is not obvious. The discovery of a whole new world is delightful and provoking, and lots of fun.

This series is a continuation of my other Tree series, only this time I have concentrated on the tree's bark. Tree bark is quite complex, full of texture and depth, color, even, and is home to a myriad of tiny creatures. The bark is also the main key to identifying a tree's genus and species. I have treated this subject matter in such a way as to bring out the sculptural qualities and texture, while simultaneously creating whole new fantasy worlds. These images give abstracts a whole new meaning.

Nature photographers tend to dwell only on the natural and discount the man-made. I am creating this new series to showcase the hidden abstract features that occur naturally in the hardscape. We are talking about anything fabricated by man and installed in the environment. I hope to convey the powerful forces of nature on these seemingly indestructible materials, only to show that nothing can withstand the onslaught of nature. Also, our hardscape materials are manufactured from naturally occurring resources, be it a forest cut down yesterday (which I do not promote), or materials created from a forest millions of years ago. No mater what, nature leaves her imprint on these "hard" features, gradually softening them and eroding them until they are one with the earth once more.

I was inspired to experiment with this technique after visiting the profound traveling art exhibiton of Ansel Adams' most iconic artworks. Thank you, Ansel, for breaking the barriers of photography and opening up whole new worlds.

Somehow, the original creators of these pensive creatures, whether famous or obscure, managed to keep a secret of permanence, only to be unlocked by creativity and experimentation.

Biography
Award-winning Michigan photographer Gwendolyn Roth has exhibited extensively locally and internationally. She is primarily self-taught.
Gwendolyn grew up in an art-inspired family, learning the basic principles of photography from her father and discovering how to see the real world from her mother. Gwendolyn attended Michigan State University, earning her undergraduate degree in Landscape Architecture, subsequently practicing in that design field. Marriage and the arrival of her first child rekindled her passion for photography as she created a vast collection of family photos. Her husband's career took them to Europe for several years, where she amassed thousands more photographs of her family's time there - a self-imposed travel photography program, with husband and now two babies in tow! These experiences taught Gwendolyn to see and compose quickly.
Ultimately fulfilling her roles as wife and mother-of-three, photography answered Gwendolyn’s most vexing question ever: now what? She jumped back into photography, embracing the enlightening transition from film to digital and never looking back.
Gwendolyn’s work emphasizes fine art and healing art, but she will photograph anything that catches her eye. Uplifting and encouraging perspectives of everyday life inspire her creativity.
Total immersion in photography defines Gwendolyn’s role as an artist as she explores an endless evolution of technique and subject. She is especially fond of creating composites and digital abstracts to express her emotions as she discovers wonderment and joy with her camera.
She looks forward to a future filled with photography.
