Giovanni Boldini was an Italian painter who lived and worked in Paris for most of his life. He was born on December 31, 1842, and died on January 11, 1931. A 1933 article in Time magazine said that his flowing style of painting made him known as the "Master of Swish."
He was born on December 31, 1842, in Ferrara, Italy. He was the younger brother of an architect named Luigi (Louis) Boldini. His father was a religious painter. In 1862, he went to Florence to study and paint for six years. He didn't go to classes very often at the Academy of Fine Arts, but in Florence, he met a group of realist painters called the Macchiaioli. These artists were Italian forerunners of Impressionism. Their influence can be seen in Boldini's landscapes, which show how he spontaneously reacted to nature. However, he is best known for his portraits. Boldini became a successful portrait artist after he moved to London. He painted portraits of people like Lady Holland and the Duchess of Westminster who was well-known in society. From 1872 on, he lived in Paris, where he met Edgar Degas and became friends with him. In the late 19th century, he was the most popular portrait painter in Paris. He had a bold style that was influenced by Macchiaioli and reminded people of the work of younger artists like John Singer Sargent and Paul Helleu.
In 1889, he was chosen to be the commissioner of the Italian section of the Paris Exposition. For this job, he was given the Légion d'honneur. He had a one-man show in New York in 1897. In 1895, 1903, 1905, and 1912, he took part in the Venice Biennale.
On January 11, 1931, Boldini died in Paris.
