Autodidacte, Gérard Gelin l'a été dans plusieurs domaines.
Le graphisme, où dès l'adolescence il se passionne pour la technique de la "ligne claire" et s'essaie à la réalisation de BD. La musique ensuite, dans les années 70, comme bassiste, une expérience qu'il renouvellera bien plus tard comme auteur-compositeur d'un groupe de Jazz-Rock.
C'est en 1992 qu'il se consacre à la peinture et exécute une série de grands formats dans le courant Abstraction lyrique.
En un jeu subtil de caché-révélé, de masquages et de grattages successifs, il expérimente, envisage, choisit avec pertinence les potentialités des couleurs sombres et de la matière. Le hasard y aurait-il sa place ? Sûrement. Mais alors il n'est pas subi et ressort davantage de ce qu'André Breton nommait chez les Surréalistes le "hasard objectif".
Dans les années 2000, il fonde WebART, association d'artistes plasticiens avec lesquels il va expérimenter divers moyens d'expression.
Il crée un festival d'art contemporain à l'Orangerie de La Mothe St Héray où il réunit tous les ans 80 artistes. Il étend ce festival à la Commanderie de St Marc-la-Lande pour en faire un rendez-vous incontournable de l'Art Contemporain.
Parallèlement, il signe deux livres d'art consacrés à la peinture, la sculpture et la photographie : "Webart, du réel au virtuel" puis "En Corps et Toujours" (Editions Patrimoines & Médias).
En 2013, après avoir fréquenté le Centre International des Arts de la Céramique à St Amand-en-Puisaye, il développe 'à la plaque' des constructions sur le thème qu'il nomme « Les Anarchitectures ».
Depuis 2020, il travaille sur la couleur avec une peinture vive et joyeuse, en contre-pied de sa période sombre des années 90. Un pied de nez à la morosité ambiante...
