The series dedicated to the rim is the first made by Gambasin
after a long period of inactivity.
In all the designs that make it up, "the circle" is represented
using black and white, for the background, and a single color,
different for each of them.
To understand and appreciate these works it is impossible not to
make at least a brief reference to some of the many
philosophical meanings and to the complex symbolism that has
always accompanied this figure.
The circle, in many cultures, especially in the ancient ones,
represents the state of primordial substance, uniform and
undifferentiated. It is free of oppositions, such as, for example,
high / low, in reference to the concepts of equality and harmony.
It symbolizes the sky and with it both the dimension of
spirituality, of the non-tangible existence, and the eternal cycle
of life.
The circle also plays an important role in the world of magic
according to which the "magic circles" served as protection
against the evoked forces and threatening presences.
In the works that make up the series, the color seems to radiate
from the circle traced as energy that originates from it and
therefore expands. The spiritual dimension wants to impose
itself on materiality. The latter is exemplified by the background,
in black and white, composed of an interweaving of figures
including recognizable faces, some assorted, others sad and
melancholic.
It could be the fall into reality that arouses such moods
combined with the fear of never being able to rise to something
higher.
But all this sadness and bewilderment, which become almost
palpable, also seem, in some way, to prophesy the dramatic
moment that the world, whose globality is represented by the
circle, has faced due to the pandemic that fell there early 2020.
On the other hand, one of the characteristics of art is precisely
that of being able, at the moment of its manifestation, to
anticipate what will come, to perceive something that is
precluded to the human senses.

Giovanni Gambasin lives and works in Canada where he stands out for his unique approach to surrealism. A versatile artist, he uses pencil on cardboard and oil on wood to create works imbued with mystery and depth. His technique, combining precision of drawing and richness of painting, allows him to explore imaginary worlds where reality is transformed into a waking dream. Inspired by the surrealist visions of the masters of the genre, Gambasin develops captivating compositions that question the perception of reality and fantasy. Each piece reflects his quest for meaning through intriguing juxtapositions and meticulous details.
