Steph'L (stéphane LAURENT) is a French painter and art historian, born close to Paris, France.

He was first trained as a designer at the Ecole Boulle (BA, 1987). He obtained an MA in Design and MA in Visual Art Education at the Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan and taught Visual Art, Design and Art History in design schools like the Academy Charpentier located in Montparnasse, a free and international art studio (Academie libre) where Zadkine and Bourdelle used to give art lessons.

He obtained a PhD in Art History at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne in 1996. He has published several books on painters (Bernard Buffet, 2000; Gustave Courbet 2007), history of design (Chronologie du Design, 1999) or decorative arts (Figures de l'Ornement, 2005). As a painter, he has exhibited his artworks in Paris, in Asia (Republic of China, 2006) and in Venice in 2009. His paintings are permanently displayed at the Atelier 21 (Paris) and at the Villa 15 (Dubai).

About his paintings

Steph'L first paintings where made of classical landscapes of Provence in France where he travels frequently.

He was motivated by a taste for light and colour to evoke the scenery of the region. His strong background as an Art historian and scholar made his works evolving closer to the field of art history and especially to the baroque in which he found a special interest for the sense of movement, contrast and drama.

The reference to classical composition and to the great themes in art are combined with a vivid expression, which is to be related to contemporary painting. The third period in the evolution of his artworks is based on an aesthetical reflexion on the heritage of the classical icons.

The compositions are more conceived by sequences and frames together with an amused expression of the concepts of monumentally, gravity and interpretation. Finally, his current location in the Middle East have inspired him a new serial, which reshapes the famous 19th-20th century Orientalist painting trend through his distinctive style.
