Starace’s abstract works deconstruct and reimagine the concept of form, blending layers of oil and acrylic into dynamic compositions. Expanses of color, richly textured surfaces, and sweeping gestures embody the energy and movement of human expression without direct representation. The works invite viewers to explore themes of vitality, spirit, and transformation, suggesting an emotional landscape where structure and fluidity coexist within the intangible forces that shape self-identity.
Drawing inspiration from the fusion of the Australian landscape and the artist’s Italian homeland, these abstract landscapes merge the colors and warmth of both regions. A recent trip to Rome rekindled connections to cherished childhood memories and a deeper understanding of self through the coastline, hills, and timeless beauty of the land. Influenced by the principles of Zen, the paintings evoke balance, timelessness, and interconnectedness, encouraging introspection and a profound appreciation for life.
Starace’s creative process begins intuitively, using pastels, charcoal, and other mediums that resonate in the moment. Layer by layer, the compositions develop depth in color and meaning. The process is experimental and instinctive, allowing colors to flow freely while embracing unpredictability. The palette shifts from subtle to intense, with the artist’s signature “line” weaving throughout—a reflection of connection to land, family, people, the divine, and self.

This large collection wishes to capture the different color and shape formations of clouds and rainbows utilizing a mixed technique of adding and scraping oil paint both on canvas and on wooden boards. With daily observation, sketching, and photography of the clouds in my local area, Australia, and the imaginative recollection of my memories, I like to create dreamy-like artwork, wanting to engage and inspire the audience in many different layers.

My fascination with flowers has always been so strong in my art and I love painting flowers of different kinds. Flowers have been the key theme for many artists all over the world, bringing joy and colour to any interior. In my practice, I like to mix the adding and scraping technique utilizing different layers of oil paint with an intuitive modus operandi.

Gallery Herk Alexander is proud to present Form & Flesh, an exhibition showcasing the works of Australian fine artist Graham G. Robertson (1930-2010) and Italian contemporary artist Gaia Starace. Together their distinct approaches create an evocative exploration of the human condition, forging a powerful dialogue between anatomy and abstraction that transcends traditional representation.
Rooted in the classical tradition, Robertson's delicate life studies on paper offer an intimate portrayal of the human form, capturing both vulnerability and strength. Rendered in warm tones of sanguine, each expressive line and gesture extends beyond physicality, inviting viewers to contemplate the fragile yet resilient nature of existence.
In contrast, Starace's abstract compositions use oil and acrylic on canvas and board to deconstruct and reimagine form. Her dynamic use of colour, rich textures and sweeping brushstrokes embody the energy and movement of human expression, encouraging viewers to explore underlying themes of vitality and spirit

Rooted in the natural world, Forever Clouds is a visually captivating site-specific installation that teases our perception of reality. Including semi-abstract paintings, minimalistic sculptures, and a full height installation with symbolic lightning, this exhibition engages a broad generational audience, inviting one’s unique interpretation of the timeless and unbounded formations of clouds. Conveying feelings of wonderment and playfulness, Forever Clouds instigates many possible layers of meaning: from self-reflection to a broader collective cognition of the life changing events we’re facing today, this exhibition also wishes to contemplate the beauty of our natural environment, while aspiring to preserve it and respect it.
In speaking about her process, the artist explains, 'Painting is an emotional and intuitive process for me...I always strive to find harmony within the different techniques I utilise. I love to re-create things, playing with the mediums, stretching their meanings...'
