While reading “The Gene, an Intimate History” by Siddhartha Mukherjee through, Hurtaud learned about Gregor Mendel, a monk who cultivated pees to research the effects of hybridization. This inspirational moment was crucial for him, propelling him to look into the intricacies of plants. Pliant and exact, liquid metal was the perfect medium to depict something organic, while keeping it solid and tactile when hardened. Additionally, Hurtaud decided to enlarge microscopic elements to a much bigger scale, bringing the complexity of natural creations closer to the eye. So, “The Mendel Project” was born.

François Hurtaud is a French industrial designer and artist. Fascinated by nature he built his creative practice combining scientific discoveries, natural elements, and modern mediums.

His works often incorporate botanical features and ergonomic aspects, signaling the human-centric character of his ideas. A genuine creator, François Hurtaud enjoyed this new-found creative experience that offered more freedom and presented unique objects as a contrast to his industrial design creations. Today, he continues to operate as a successful product designer, but his artistic research continues as he plans to create art regularly with a focus on sculpture.

François Hurtaud was born in 1988, in Brittany, France. He lives and works in Hong Kong, China.
