Francisco Zuniga
Francisco Zúñiga was a Costa Rican-born Mexican artist renowned for his stylized figurative paintings and sculptures. Born on December 27, 1912, in Barrio de San José, Costa Rica, to a family of sculptors, Zúñiga developed an early passion for art. He is best known for his depictions of female figures, often portraying women in natural environments or as contemporary market-goers in Mexico. His work reflects a deep influence of pre-Columbian art, evident in the boldly simplified forms of his sculptures, which strive for a timeless, mysterious quality.
Zúñiga’s artistic development was shaped by his admiration for German Expressionists and the sculptor Auguste Rodin, which he blended with the regional Aztec forms that informed his uniquely Latin American style. Though he dabbled in abstraction, Zúñiga is primarily celebrated for his honest portrayals of female peasants from Central America, favoring full figures and non-idealized body types. His sculptures, often cast in bronze, also employed materials such as alabaster, modeling clay, plaster, and marble. He expanded his repertoire throughout his career, producing his first lithograph at the age of 60.
Zúñiga studied under sculptor Oliverio Martinez and painter Manuel Rodríguez Lozano at the Escuela de Talla Directa in Mexico, with his first instructor being his father, Manuel María Zúñiga. His legacy as one of the great Latin Masters of the 20th century is cemented by his works, which are housed in prestigious collections such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.
