Do you like to dream?
Sigmund Freud believed that dreams were a "secret" expression of our unconscious desires. He believed that studying these emotions through analysis could help cure mental illness.
However, Freud's theory has never been proven. Scientists have attempted to find out what dreams really mean. Some researchers believe that the dreaming process is random, while others believe that dreams are more organized. In some cultures, dreaming was considered prophetic.
Dreams are often a manifestation of tension or stress in waking life. Nightmares may be recollections of traumatic experiences, while other dreams are linked to happier events.
Some studies have suggested that the content of dreams may be a marker of distress for people with post-traumatic stress syndrome. While PTSD patients have nightmares, people without the condition can also have nightmares.
Other researchers have suggested that dreams can be a tool to help people remember things. Deirdre Barrett, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School, has studied the role of dreaming in problem solving. Inge Strauch, a psychologist at the University of Zurich, studied the dreams of 24 9- to 15-year-olds. She found that children's dreams are more likely to involve animals and fantasies.
Dreams are fascinating. They can take us anywhere, and they often reflect our deepest desires and fears. That’s why artists have been exploring the world of dreams for centuries.
