The week kicked off with a baby pigeon who was on the street all day outside a Dam cafe terrace, until finally in the evening she was picked up by German tourists who got in touch with me.
This 5-week old pigeon is paralysed due to malnutrition in the nest. She is currently under treatment to regain motor nerve function.
As the week ends, several more severe stringfoot cases from Dam Square are now in rehab.
Yesterday afternoon, as I was there to pick up a double stringfoot, a Gemeenteamsterdam utility van which was parked on the square took off, right through the flock of pigeons who were standing around it while being fed by the tourists & families.
The bloody insides of one pigeon were left on the ground in front of all the kids.
Dam Square is not a street or a road!
It is a pedestrian space, with many pigeons crowded on the ground, all around. In these circumstances the shocking killing of this pigeon cannot reasonably be seen as an accident. Instances of City Council vehicles running over, or sweeping up, pigeons at Dam (and other pedestrian areas!) are far too common, according to eyewitnesses.
We request that Gemeenteamsterdam educates their workers on animal safety, & we ask our followers to lodge a complaint about this particular killing. There can be no excuse for this recklessness.
Pigeons at Dam Square are very vulnerable.
They spend all day on the square, dependant & sustained by the visitors & tourists. They do not have a normal fear of humans & are easily grabbed and trampled.
In the coming months there also will be many juvenile pigeons there again, who are even less equipped to protect themselves from human feet, hands, and City Council vans running through them.
City pigeons are estray animals, with all the suffering, illness and accidents that this predicament entails.
Until Amsterdam implements effective pigeon management / pigeon welfare policies then we will continue to witness endless suffering. «

Elodie M. Richard was born in France but with a complex heritage including Polish and Russian. Due to her father’s career in the Army her family had to regularly move and adapt to new locations in France and abroad. Her life path as a child and adult is made of travels and regular changes of geographical locations, constantly balancing between feeling of loss, challenges and new life starts.
Unlike a superficial society that gets lost in ultra consumption, Elodie creates a refined, symbolic and meditative world around the broad notion of identity. She takes her inspirations from personal experiences but also current events and her connection to nature.
The artist currently lives in Central Florida with her husband (artist himself) and their small flock of 5 rescued pigeons.
This page shows an inventory of her work as a painter and illustrator since 2016 up to this current year.
Some of her artworks appear as sold, if interested in an art piece, please private message Elodie.
