''Moose's Flock is a 501c3 non-profit sanctuary and rescue dedicated to helping as many of these amazing birds (pigeons/doves) as possible. We provide medical care, foster and adoptive homes for non-native doves, unreleasable ferals and domestic pigeons in Southern California. We also educate the general public on pigeon history, welfare and their ability to make amazing pets. Lastly, we advocate for kinder ways to live alongside these creatures whom we created and then abandoned to their fate.'' (Jenna Close, owner and creator of the Sanctuary)

This is a series of portraits focusing on a bird that symbolizes love, peace but also a longtime messenger, the pigeon.
Elodie creates her illustrations on wet watercolor paper (white background) with needle point pen and high quality pure pigments. This technique is all about how the paint flows, disperses and settles on the paper. To Elodie the spontaneity and unpredictability of this medium, and how you control it, with years of art practice, is one of the reasons she loves it in the first place. She intentionally puts the all focus on the pigeons, her composition typically plays between positive and negative spaces. The needle point pen meets the brush and flow of watercolor. Watercolor pencils are also used to create visual texture on feathers work. The style is voluntarily more realistic, with a focus on facial expressions, especially the eyes as birds communicate a lot of their emotions through their gaze, eye blinking, feathers aspect, and body language.
Through their distribution and adaptations over millions of years, Pigeons can be found on every continent. And not only can they be found on every continent, but they seem to have adapted to every ecosystem — including those created or occupied by humans.
We domesticated the pigeon about 5,000 years ago. The pigeon really highlights how humans tend to only admire animals for which we have a use. We had a use for pigeons: We used them as food, we used them as precious messengers throughout our human history, and their stools as a fantastic fertilizer but also to create gun powder. Only recently (1950’s) we just let go of the animal we used to love. We assumed pigeons would just die out without us. But we’ve created niches in our cities that have been perfect for them. So they have continued to thrive. Now that we don’t have a use for them, we just disdain them. If not victims of animal cruelty, abused on the streets for their mere existence, pigeons are treated as disposable things through pigeon races and wedding/events pigeons/doves release.
Rock pigeons have a long and, as it turns out, complicated history with human beings. They deserve our kindness and maybe even a gold medal for their service to humanity.
Each painting of this special series relates their incredible stories of resilience, survival, but also tells a great deal of our special bond with those incredible, not so common birds.
Each artwork is available for order in Limited Series Art Prints of high quality, hand signed and numbered up to 300. Each artwork comes with the printable story of the bird represented. ''To Ukraine, A War Journal (2022)'' is a book of art illustrations about the Russian invasion of Ukraine [...]
''To Ukraine, A War Journal (2022)'' is a book of art illustrations about the Russian invasion of Ukraine which started in February 2022. Following the news, the artist creates a series that covers the theme of war in all its aspects. This art journal of illustrations ends in December 2022). At the end of year 2022, It was a real dilemma to give closure to a this art project, knowing that the conflict would pursue. The last page of the journal is untitled and opened to the viewer’s own interpretation.
The pages of the original journal are thick and 100% cotton, Elodie M. Richard uses watercolor, black ink, metal leaf, natural pigments, to express her own emotions and graphic interpretation of Ukrainian Identity at War. A Dove/Pigeon, symbol of love and peace but also messenger, evolves throughout the paintings during different episodes of this ongoing conflict. Composition, bold colors, negative and positive space, graphisme and inclusion of text are influenced by the Polish School of Posters (Warsaw).
The original paintings are all 7''x12'' but can be printed in slightly larger dimensions. This series is available for order under the form of archival art prints only. Elodie M Richard — Born in France but with a complex heritage including Polish and Russian, Elodie presents her personal contemporary quest around the theme of identity. In this Series, each of her paintings questions many layers around this theme that we all have – time, place, family, culture that make up our individual identities.
Her acrylic paintings are very graphic, linear, influenced by the Polish School of Posters (Warsaw), that began in the 1950's through the 1980's. This school combined the aesthetics of painting and the use of metaphor with the succinctness of the poster. The Polish posters significantly influenced the international development of graphic design in poster art. Influenced by the colors of folk art, they combine printed slogans, often hand-lettered, with popular symbols, to create concise metaphor. These posters revealed the artist's emotional involvement with the subject. They were the artist's interpretation and commentary on the subject and on society.
Elodie's work has been exhibited in France, Scotland and the U.S, and belongs to private collections located in France, Poland, New Zealand, Scotland, Australia and the U.S.

There are no preliminary drawings, Elodie wants to keep her lines spontaneous. No mistakes are allowed, which makes each piece special and unique. These are one of a kind watercolors. Biography
Elodie M. Richard was born in France but with a complex heritage including Polish and Russian. Due to her father’s career in the Army her family had to regularly move and adapt to new locations in France and abroad. Her life path as a child and adult is made of travels and regular changes of geographical locations, constantly balancing between feeling of loss, challenges and new life starts.
Unlike a superficial society that gets lost in ultra consumption, Elodie creates a refined, symbolic and meditative world around the broad notion of identity. She takes her inspirations from personal experiences but also current events and her connection to nature.
The artist currently lives in Central Florida with her husband (artist himself) and their small flock of 5 rescued pigeons.

An interview/article by Palomacy (Pigeon Rescue Organization, San Francisco, USA)
Palomacy Pigeon & Dove Adoptions is a volunteer-powered, donation-funded foster-based nonprofit rescue saving the lives of domestic (unreleasable) birds that are lost, injured, displaced & abandoned. They provide rescue, foster care, avian vet treatment and adoption services in Northern California as well as 24/7/365 care coaching, referrals, advocacy and education nationwide via their online Help Group and website resources. Palomacy’s foster volunteers care for a caseload of approximately 170 birds at any given time and are the heart and soul of the rescue.
While their organization hatched as a local effort to help pigeons and doves in the San Francisco Bay Area, the need for what they do is unlimited. They are one of the only organizations in the world (and possibly the first) completely dedicated to rescuing, rehabbing and rehoming the lost, injured, or displaced pigeon and dove survivors of exploitative businesses, hobbies and sports. With your support, they rescue in Northern California and help birds from all over the world through their Palomacy Help Group.

This is Ollie.
No, although his condition looks like PMV it’s not PMV
His condition is most likely a congenital issue of his central nervous system.
Ollie is disabled and was hatched this way. Ollie cannot stand still, nor walk like a typical pigeon, or fly BUT since his young age he has been developing his incredible resilience and strong willed temper, this little bird had absolutely the will to live and energy to move mountains. Ollie is total pure cuteness, he captures the heart of humans who have the chance to get to know him. Ollie loves to cuddle, and is also very playful. He is deeply loved by his human mother who is wonderfully taking care of him. We love Ollie!!!

My Juju and me. I rescued Juju ten months ago, she was only a few weeks old and was targeted by crows and seagulls on the beach close to where I live. She was so much underweight, like a skeleton. She quickly impregnated on me, and after treating all her wounds and giving her a worming treatment, she grew beautifully. She Joined my little flock of 4 rescued pigeons and is now an important member of our human/feathered family. We love her, she is all about love, has a fun personality and alike my other birds, is like a little feathered person with her own character and temper. She calms me when I am overwhelmed by emotions and stress, she is so therapeutic and such a friendly, kind soul, alike all pigeons out there. Humanity owes so much to pigeons, they are unfairly treated, it is time for the world to remember what we owe them, and the respect and help they deserve. They are an important part of our urban ecosystems and as urban (domestic) animals, they are the crucial key to getting the public to connect and conserve nature. They definitely have a role to play in our modern urban lives.

Pigeons have thousands of years of history intertwined with ours, they symbolize peace, faith, fidelity, love, hope and happiness. The reality of their lives though and how they are unfairly rejected or mistreated by us nowadays is not so glorious for our own image as humans. Here is my ''Call To Pigeons - 2023'' art project, featuring a series of art portraits and gathering contemporary rescue stories about pigeons. As my art project grew and developed came the necessity to create an art book which would be the result of a year of work on the subject. A book made with love, which can be read by adults, by teenagers, or read to children, a meaningful edition that inspires and encourages the good in humans. The original art illustrations are all 7''x10''. With the perspective of a virtual presentation, I chose an industrial setting as pigeons try to survive in urban environments, with a ceiling opening to the sky. Each exhibited artwork would be an archival print at a large scale, here 118.11'' x 118.11''. Each one of these rescued birds has an incredible and unique story of survival and resilience that inspires respect, and I also selected some of my daily flock live portraits that I created at the beach where I feed pigeons that became regulars. Pigeon rescue is not an isolating thing that has no impact, it is a true and authentic movement that is happening worldwide, spreads and grows with strength and conviction each day, whether through the love and dedication of independent individuals or with the work of rescue organizations that bring awareness and educate, such as Great Lakes Pigeon Rescue and Palomacy, among so many more. Pigeons are in fact incredibly complex and intelligent animals. They have been with us for ten thousands years (Mesopotamian tablets mention their domestication more than 5,000 years ago, while Egyptian hieroglyphics tells that domestication happened as early as 10,000 years ago). They are considered as the first bird species to be domesticated by humans. Pigeons, also called doves, have been a longtime source of inspiration and even served as messengers of the gods. Pigeons appear in all religions. For thousands of years, they served us as messengers as well, we literally built our human history and empires thanks to them. They saved numerous humans lives, during wars (WW1, WW2 for the most recent ones), and were celebrated, honored and decorated with honorific medals such as the Dickin Medal. They also saved lives of numerous humans lost at sea... We owe them so much. In documentation from the late 19th century, humans show compassion to pigeons, condemning the sport of pigeon shooting. Early in the next century, the opinion suddenly changed. Pigeons became a problem between the 1950's and the 1960's, when people started to dislike them and consider them as a nuisance. They were framed by several officials as ''menacing'' vermin to get rid of ''because of their stools''. But you could say the same about all living animals. Pigeon zoonotic diseases? In truth, epidemiologists who know about diseases and viruses, say that pigeons extremely rarely interact in ways which could make us sick. So why have people only very recently decided to hate them?....The issue is not anything that pigeons do, but how we see them and the spaces we share with them. The recent false idea and misleading information from pests companies, making an online propaganda about pigeons to be seen as pests, is a SYMPTOM OF PEOPLE' S IDEA THAT THE URBAN ENVIRONMENTS WE BUILD ARE SEPARATE FROM NATURAL ONES. THAT THERE IS A LINE THAT SEPARATES ''CIVILIZATION'' AND UNCONTROLLED NATURE. We decide to build a parking, we cut all the existent native trees and destroy natural habitats, to replant chosen trees in some little squares cut in the concrete, and that is where the trees should be. We don't like when the grass begins to grow through cracks of the tarmac, because that is NATURE BREAKING OUT OF LIMITS THAT WE WANT TO KEEP IT IN. Pigeons cross those borders imagined by humans everyday, naturally sharing the same urban space than us. By peacefully transgressing our controlled vision of the city, pigeons show us that nature in the city does exist and gives life to its monotonous grey buildings. Their peaceful freedom is just enough to raise hate. Condemned as epidemiological threat despite actually being extremely poor sources of diseases, pigeons became unfairly a health menace, supported by misleading and false information. But, how sad would be our cities without those graceful flights in the sky and kind feathered hearts? Pigeons were domesticated by humans, abandoned by them, and only very recently have been shamed for their existence. Absolutely no animal is disposable and should have to suffer such merciless consequences for the only crime of living. It is our responsibility as humans to help them, to take care of them. That is why it is important to have people like you who care to fight against animal cruelty and animal abandonment.

CALL TO PIGEON 2023-2024 ( MY CURRENT ART PROJECT)
This is the second year of my Call to Pigeons art project !!!
Here starts the second year of my « Call to Pigeons ! » . Pigeons have thousands of years of history intertwined with ours, they symbolize peace, faith, fidelity, love, hope and happiness. Mankind owes them so much!! The reality of their lives though and how they are unfairly rejected or mistreated by us is not so glorious for our own image as humans. How come such emotionally complex, gentle and smart creatures are nowadays so overlooked after thousands of years of service, being celebrated, honored, loved and praised all around the world and in all cultures/religions? In truth the way we treat pigeons reflect our own humanity.

Are you a rescued pigeon parent, would you like to submit your bird/portrait story to possibly be part of this special series? I am looking forward to create a series of portraits that witness their unique beauty despite their handicaps or injuries. Your birds unique stories of survival and rescue deserve to be honored. The materials I will need to work with are: good quality photographs that will inspire me to create a portrait, a paragraph that tells your bird story, and a photograph of the pigeon with his human family. Each pigeon story will be different. I will also reach out personally to rescues to create art about their special needs pigeons and incredible stories of survival and resilience.
As owner of this project, my goal is to create Limited series art prints of my original illustrations, with the creation of a second collectible art book (limited series) and/or an art exhibit on the long term. A portion of the art sales will help generate donations to rescues involved. Please follow my instagram artist page and PM ME IF INTERESTED.

To Ukraine - A War Journal - An art project created and owned by artist Elodie M.Richard
Artist Elodie M. Richard is creating a humanitarian fundraising to help Ukrainian families and children. Following the current news, this is an ongoing live project to create a book which can also become an art exhibit. Each pages of the journal can be printed as is or in larger poster format if requested.
