All summer they have battled and the Rose, using chemical warfare has held the ravaging Aphids at bay. But now, summer is waning and the food supplies of the Rose are diminished as it has used them to grow and mature and put forth the blooms that would attract its pollinators. The Aphids' first few offensives fell to attacks by the Roses' allies, a hatching of Ladybug larva that slew the Aphids by the hundreds. The adult beetles were little less threat when they swarmed to Rose leaving behind the dry and lifeless husks of hundreds more Aphid warriors.
The Aphids had their allies too. Fast and powerful Ants that carried them to their prey and later took their reward by harvesting the excess sugary 'honeydew' the Aphids excreted. That 'honeydew' is the Aphids' chemical weapon in this struggle. It's residues fed funguses that attacked the Roses system and weakened its ability to resist. Soon, the fighting season will end as cooler damper weather strengthens the mildew fungus and the Rose begins loosing its ability to fight back. The Ladybug allies retreat before the coming of winter, but so do the Ants, returning to their sheltered colonies.
The Rose grows weak with less sun and lower temperatures. It sheds its damaged leaves and pulls back supplies from its weaker stems, and as temperatures continue to drop a sort of peace falls over the garden again. In the soil, for a while, new nourishment is released from the bi-products of carbon consuming micro-organisms, only to be dissolved and washed away in the deluge of water flowing through the soil. Starvation sets in and creatures die my the millions and few organisms can withstand the cold that creeps between and into the grains of sand and clay that form the foundation of this world.
Spring will come and with it the sunlight and its warmth. Then plants like the Rose will come to life and begin their desperate race to outgrow their neighbors, to feed and reproduce and continue the heritage of their kind. Ants and Aphids, Ladybugs and Bees will awaken and the struggle to live will resume again.

Edwin Loftus is an American painter and draftsman born in 1951. His interest in art began at the age of 4 when he decided to draw something real rather than working from his imagination.
As a child he excelled at drawing and as a teenager he began to experiment with oil painting. In college, he took courses in art and art history and realized that true art had nothing to do with the quality of the drawing or painting, but that it had to have the ambition to push the boundaries and expand the visual experience.
He also studied philosophy, psychology and history and quickly realized that it was just another art establishment trying to defend its elitist industry and reward system. Their skills were almost non-existent, they knew nothing about psychology, perception or stimulus response, and they were extensions of the belief system that made communism, fascism and other forms of totalitarianism such destructive forces in the world. They literally believe that art shouldn't be available to ordinary human beings, but only to an elite "sophisticated" enough to understand it.
Edwin Loftus realized that the emperors of art had no clothes, but they were still the emperors. Gifted in art, he worked hard to acquire this skill. So he found other ways to make a living and sold a few artworks from time to time. For sixty years, many people enjoyed his works and some collected them.
Today, Edwin Loftus is retired. Even if he sold all his paintings for the price he asked, "artist" would be the lowest paid job he ever had... but that's the way it is. It won't matter to him after he dies. He just hopes that some people will like what he does enough to enjoy it in the future.
