Edvard Munch

Norway
Artist (Painting)
1900 - 1944

Edvard Munch was born in the Norwegian town of Løten in 1863. He dropped out of engineering school and tried his hand at painting for the first time in 1880. He then studied at several private art schools. He first visited Paris in 1885, where he discovered Impressionism through the paintings of Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. In 1886, Munch exhibited his works at the Oslo Autumn Salon. Three years later, he had his first solo exhibition at the Student Union. In 1892, his exhibition at the Verein Berliner Künstler (Berlin Artists' Union) was so controversial that it was closed after a week. Increasingly, Munch painted psychedelic states, making him an important source of ideas for Expressionism. Munch suffered a nervous breakdown in 1908. He died in 1944 in Ekely, near Oslo.
