The main characteristic of Djebel's work is the mise en abyme of the notion of genre, not because it is one of the main characteristics of his “work in progress” but rather because it inflects the very nature of visualization as well as that of the management of pictorial space; even though the nature of the surface is positioned through a particular conception of the frame.
If we refer to the purely symbolic field of the gesture, reduced to borrowing from the great historical currents as well as to the particular status of the diversion of an object in its tautological definition, it is obvious that this approach poses bases to decipher that resonate.
But let us not get lost in classifying this production too quickly as “given” or post-Duchampian, no, it is not.
Because it would be reductive to think that Djebel's work is a possible continuation of what some could too quickly name as “dominant current” in an international production that seeks and rediscovers the roots of the first gesture, that of painting.
