Dhruba Chandra Roy Badhon

Dhruba Chandra Roy is a self taught Bangladeshi visual artist who has awakened immense potential in the originality, complexity and depth of his work. Born and brought up in intimate contact with nature in the idyllic village of Sultan-khali beside the Brahmaputra river in the district of Jamalpur in the north-east of Bangladesh, he went on to complete his higher secondary schooling from Shahid Syed Nazrul Islam College, Mymensingh after finishing primary and secondary education from his village. Later he joined Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Sylhet to study physics undergrad. Although he had a penchant for painting since childhood he credits his time in SUST for his development as an artist. In his undergrad years, he was exposed to a wide range of resources on the internet where he could hone his artistic technique and immerse himself in and analyze the works of thousands of artists from across the world and time periods. But more importantly, his participation in various political movements and close interaction with people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds and regions during this time has been crucial in informing both who he is as a person and artist. His distinctive reimagination of human anatomy as opposed to standard western aesthetics, choice and expertise in portrayal of subjects such as human relations, their dichotomy, the complexity of human mind, working class and class struggle, contemporary and historical socio-political events coupled with an incessant attention towards detailing of apparently insignificant elements of nature which enables demonstration of humans relations with nature even in a sociopolitical context, give rise to his unique style. Bonhi Bohoman–a 50 x 30 sq ft mural situated in SUST, a public university in Bangladesh–is his most acclaimed work.
