This oil painting by contemporary artist Dharshana Bajaj is from the series titled Living In Harmony With Nature. Based on ancient Indian philosophy, and inspired by Nature, this work celebrates our oneness with all that is. Instinctively we are all aware of the truth of “oneness”. In the hullabaloo of daily living, this insight is often dulled. Wise are those who relearn or retain the deeper perspective. These are the leaders, the artist, philosophers amidst us. Here in this painting, we see a figure of Mahatma Gandhi, merging with the natural world around him, basking in being a part of a power far greater than all. When we spend more time in Nature, appreciating its beauty and being present, we too can realize this oneness. The dots have been used as homage to Quantum Physics which asserts that this world is made up of atoms, swirling and intermingling with millions of others around.

Dharshana Bajaj is a contemporary Indian artist, based in Chennai. Her favorite theme is Nature, specifically depicting people and animals living in harmony with Nature. The artist’s philosophy about mankind’s interrelationship with the natural world is the basis of most of her current artistic work. Backed by ancient India’s Vedanta philosophy of “Tat Tvam Asi”, or “I Am That”, and the promise of Quantum physics that the world is a swarm of atoms (dots) in constant flux, Dharshana’s art aims to serve as a talisman or mnemonic for the unseen reality of Oneness.

While she exhibited her art for the first time in 1996, after completing her MA in History of Fine Arts, from Stella Maris College, Chennai, the artist has since exhibited her work in several group and solo shows. Recently, she participated in Finite Versus Infinite, a group show curated by the Art critic and historian Dr. Ashrafi S. Bhagat, at the Dakshina Chitra Museum, Chennai; “Art is Drama”, the 12th International Group Exhibition, at the Haegeumgang Theme Museum, South Korea; and the FIAG International Art Festival, at the Chang Kil Hwan Art Museum, South Korea.

Dharshana is not only a visual artist but also an editor and an author. She has written two books to date to convey her thoughts on this subject verbally: Gaia’s Own and Gulmohar Dreams. Oil paints on canvas are her preferred media and her art is both representational and abstract.

Here is an excerpt describing Dharshana's recent art taken from the catalog for the group show Finite Versus Infinite, written by Dr. Ashrafi S. Bhagat:

"A very sensitive artist, both in her persona and her approach to nature, which she worships, Dharshana through her technique of dots and stippling negotiates the finite and establishes the infinite through a mountainous landscape where her dots become infinitely microscopic to convey a sense of yonder and beyond. Her correspondence of concept to her technique arises from her understanding of Quantum Atomic theories, which established that the universe is composed of molecules and atoms. It is this idea which is at the heart of her work realized through infinite variations of dots. According to the artist, “The entire universe is but an interplay and interaction of the different types of atoms, and each atom contains within itself large empty spaces”. Her large work titled “Across the Distance” is not only an expression of her artistry but her understanding of the tints and shades of colours in their constituent break up to create the sense of depth. Her mastery of technique is well established that makes her composition not only exude power but also is serenely meditative.

Her play with dots is phenomenal, in the sense that she has created forms in nature, which find their recognizable representation. Dharshana, whose approach to nature is almost spiritual, in these works establishes the binaries of science and the spirit of existence, making her work both pragmatic and poetic."
