Darkened figures of children, rendered in black, move dynamically within the frame, caught in a moment of joy and resilience. Their forms, an ode to the simplicity of youth, stand out against the unyielding urban landscape.

Nature, though suppressed, refuses to disappear. In the foreground, defiant leaves stand out - a testament to the enduring spirit of the natural world. The vibrant green foliage, bathed in the soft glow of acrylic strokes, contrasts with the harsh reality of the concrete jungle that surrounds the children. This visual tension gives the painting a sense of urgency and asks the viewer to consider the impact of an encroaching industrial age on the playgrounds of youth.

Behind the children looms the ominous presence of industrial progress. Tall chimneys rise like pillars of change, emitting smoke that stains the once pristine air. The sky itself, once blue, is now tinged with the grey hues of progress. In this symbiotic dance between the organic and the mechanical, the children navigate a world that demands adaptation.

"Child in Time" is a tribute to resilience, a visual symphony in which the innocence of youth stands firm against the encroaching tide of progress. The painting encourages introspection and invites viewers to reflect on the consequences of our actions and the fragility of the world we leave to generations to come - a stark reminder that even in the concrete grip of change, the human spirit, like the green leaves in the foreground, endures.

db Waterman is a contemporary Dutch artist. In her works she assembles original photography, assorted papers, acrylics, oil, charcoal, ink, and pencil. The variety of resources she is able to use has proved indispensable to her. The biggest challenge the collage medium posed was its unforgiving lack of transparency. Finding a way to replicate the effects of transparency afforded by paint, especially watercolors, was a large victory for the artist. The preparing labor shows through in her collages; layer upon layer of material remains visible in the finished pieces.

db Waterman believes that the body of her work is characterized by her skill for reinvention. Having always loved the appearance of weathered walls plastered with peeling paint and old posters, she revived this aesthetic with hopefully a keen and professional eye. The creative objective of her work is to “make something beautiful out of dilapidation.” Her tableaus explore the dissonance between old and new materials, intertwined in the most beautiful way possible to create dreamlike and melancholy images.
