David Vereecken (Doaf), French visual artist, self-taught.Based in La Rochelle.
While reading this biography, you probably want to know how the plastic talents of this new kind of artist have germinated? First of all, you should know that the only art course David VEREECKEN took - apart from the compulsory courses at school - was with the artist and art collector Jan Buytaert at the Sint-Niklaas academy in Flanders (Belgium). However, at the age of 10, young David only went twice to this course, which he did not like at all.
We are therefore far from the artistic standards that can be read in various biographies, tracing unusual courses and where the schools of great names are profiled.
However, from this academic memory, he retains the attitude that his father, André, an artist at heart, had towards him: he never forced him to continue his painting lessons.
But it must be said that art intrigued him. He admired and contemplated paintings and sculptures of all kinds whenever the opportunity arose, curious to understand the thoughts and methods of artists. But it was not until almost four decades later that Doaf decided to try his hand at creating new artworks himself, for our visual pleasure. The artistic fibre was inscribed in him.
In 2017, he approached acrylic paint to try a technique that was in vogue at the time: the famous "acrylic pouring". The aim of this technique, which results in abstract works, is to create cells full of colour nuances. But for him, this goal of having cells at all costs quickly became something else! He wanted to see creatures in his paintings, otherwise he would reject the work, which, in his eyes, was not successful.
This technique, which for him was very interesting and still unpredictable, he tried it again, but this time with coloured epoxy resin, which is more fluid and therefore even less controllable, to obtain creatures. Here again, after a multitude of trials, he obtains conclusive realizations with creatures that invite themselves in his paintings.
In 2019, he will exhibit his paintings for the first time. A curious and cheerful public, which likes the surprise and the appeal to the imagination, invites itself for a personal reading of his work. Indeed, not everyone sees the same thing. This is the power of "abstract art".
After this period of creation "where chance does things well", he now wishes to control the creation entirely. He then set up a process, the Cloisonne Technique on wood, which combines coloured resin and wood. The magic happens. The creatures no longer appear randomly in his paintings, but our artist creates them "voluntarily".
He is currently the only one to use this technique and to produce this kind of creations.
