Dara Paprock is a conceptual multimedia artist whose creative journey extends far beyond the traditional boundaries of art. Born in 1969, she has been a prominent figure in the world of dance and theater since her early days. In 1991, the Daily Cardinal called her “the youngest dance impresario in the Midwest” due to her prolific production of more than 100 dance and theater works at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Her artistic approach is characterized by an interdisciplinary exploration, encompassing painting, ceramics, poetry, prose, performance art, and installation. Dara Paprock’s creations reflect deep observations and visceral sensations of contemporary culture, addressing a wide range of human experiences. Despite the complexity of her ideas, her work is often imbued with humor and subtlety, using wit to engage the viewer.
Since 2005, Dara has resided in Austin, Texas after spending twelve years in Los Angeles, where she worked behind the scenes in Hollywood while raising her two sons. In addition to her art, she is a trauma-informed yoga therapist and works in the field of addiction counseling. She is also a regional representative for Global Water Dances, contributing to global water awareness initiatives.
Her artistic oeuvre is diverse and includes paintings, collages, and photographs. Notable series include "Black Dogs and Other Things," a series of 30 black paintings on canvas and paper, and "Bullet Proof Clothing For Kids and Young Adults," collages made between 2008 and 2009. She has also explored diverse themes through the series "This Looks Like Shit" and other works in watercolor, painting on canvas, textiles, line drawings, and multimedia installations.
Dara Paprock has presented her work in numerous thematic exhibitions, including the first "Day Without Art" at the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Baltimore, the "Art and Ego Festival" at the Public Theater in New York, and she was featured as a central subject in the 1999 issue of National Geographic's Global Cultures. Her films and dance performances have been presented at Dance Camera Istanbul, as well as in Britain, Spain, and the United States.
