Corine Sylvia Congiu (b. 1953, Meknes, Morocco) is a French contemporary artist based in Essonne, whose multifaceted career spans painting, drawing, photography, video, and literature. Holder of the Agrégation d'Arts Plastiques and a DEA in Aesthetics, she also studied philosophy at La Sorbonne, complementing her artistic practice with intellectual rigor.
As a protean visual artist, Congiu's primary medium is painting, but her creative pursuits extend to writing, with a novel and several short stories selected for awards and competitions. Her work has been exhibited since 1987 in prestigious galleries such as Galeries Jean, Keller, and Génie de la Bastille in Paris, as well as cultural centers, fairs, and museums, including the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Brunoy Museum, and the Museum of Damascus. Notable public commissions include a 350 m² painted environment for Lycée Hugues-Capet in Senlis (1992) and a monumental 10m × 2m painting on the abolition of slavery for the city of Évry (1998), later donated to the Téléthon.
Congiu's international reach began in 1995, with exhibitions in cities including Moscow, Seoul, Hong Kong, Alexandria, Genoa, Chicago, and Vienna. Her collaborative work with playwright and director Luc Fritsch brought her artistic vision into theatrical productions, where she created pictorial environments and performed leading roles.
A significant commission from the Art Dialogue Foundation in 2004 led to her creation of Histoire d'une ligne, a series of ten monumental canvases purchased by the city of Yerres. In 2014, she produced artwork for Cosmophonies, a performance by Hubert Reeves at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord during the Festival Jazz Nomades.
Her theoretical contributions, published in academic journals, explore her concept of "Abstract Figures," distinguishing her style from traditional lyrical abstraction. Her gestural yet geometric "Figures of thought" overlay signs and symbols, offering a layered and intellectual depth to her canvases. Through her diverse body of work, Congiu continues to challenge and expand the boundaries of contemporary art.
