Chong Fu

Xu Hui District, China
Artist (Painting)
Born 1969

Chong Fu, born in 1969, is a contemporary Chinese painter based in Shanghai, China. A self-taught artist, he is nationally celebrated for his distinctive use of jigsaw puzzle patterns in the primary colors of red, yellow, and blue, which have become a hallmark of his work.

Painting has been a lifelong passion for Chong Fu, though he temporarily set aside his artistic pursuits in the mid-1990s due to life commitments. In 2018, inspired by a neighbor who was a renowned Chinese painter, he reignited his passion and committed himself fully to art.

The genesis of his iconic jigsaw puzzle textures emerged during a reflective moment in April 2022, during the COVID-19 lockdown in Shanghai. While cycling through the French Concession, he was captivated by the interplay of sunlight and London plane tree leaves. This vision inspired him to create a new artistic form, resulting in an experimental piece completed over six months.

Chong Fu’s work is both expressive and metaphorical, drawing emotional depth from the process of creation. His puzzle motif represents the fragmented and incomplete nature of life, inviting viewers to find beauty in the journey of piecing life together. Each of his masterpieces encapsulates this philosophy, offering a vivid, thoughtful exploration of existence through his unique artistic lens.
