Born in Saumur in 1985 and now living in Notre-Dame-des-Landes near Nantes, Emilie Chaplain has been practicing drawing, "engraving" and sewing in all its forms for several years.
With a background in visual arts (graduated in visual arts in 2006) and scenography (DPEA scenographer obtained in 2010 at ENSA Nantes) Emilie became a professional artist in 2016.
At the crossroads of cosmopolitan influences, she draws her artistic inspiration from different continents and eras.
Between Indonesian puppets, world mythologies or European dresses from the 1950s, slender feminine silhouettes contrast with hybrid representations of fabulous creatures.
On the practical side, it is mainly focused on the enhancement of the motif in the pictorial creation, of the repetitive form as the skeleton of the painting.
The India ink and the alcohol marker allow a precision of the pattern as a basis for the construction of the images. The tangled patterns are transformed, little by little, into graphic shapes, unstructured bodies, fabulous bestiaries, mental landscapes with variable geometries.
