The "Indomitables" make up a series of 8 collectible sculptures in which Cesare Viola emphasizes the power of the irreducible horse. A parallelism with himself and with his nature.
The horse in the symbology can identify the archetype of impetuosity. Related to both fire, as often referred to in much of Nordic and continental European mythology, and water, as in classical Greek mythology.
According to the mythological tradition, the Horses (centaurs) would have belonged to two ethically distinct categories. One would have represented the pure and irrational force for which the horses would have originated from the union of Ixion with a cloud, the other instead would have represented the beneficial force.
The horse is, among other things, a symbol of intelligence, and although man manages to govern it, it maintains its dignified, imperious and noble appearance. In Hebrew, the saddle horse is called פ ר ש PARASH, a word which also means to explain, define, give intelligence.
The Horse is a symbol of radiance, of spiritual and physical energy, of wisdom, of compassion, of power, of freedom, of independence, of domination of one's impulses, of strength, of responsibility, of respect, of value, of nobility of soul.
In dreams the horse appears as a symbol of the unconscious contents of the psyche, of uncontrolled instinct, of vital strength and energy. Freud considers it a manifestation of desire and freedom.
The Celts considered the horse to be the symbol of the Goddess who manifests herself in various guises, one of which was the incarnation of the grain spirit, and sometimes the animal was sacrificed to perpetuate the lives of men. The horse was therefore associated with fecundity.
A prancing horse represents freedom, the desire to be independent, to think with one's own brain, not to be commanded and above all to rebel against conditioning and the bridle.
