Bernard Sabathé, a contemporary French sculptor, is a self-taught artist with nearly 40 years of experience in the craft. As a former physical education and sports teacher, Bernard's fascination with sculpting initially centered around the human body, particularly in moments of pain or distress.
Working exclusively with wood, Bernard occasionally incorporates metal or mineral elements into his sculptures, especially when seeking to emphasize themes of suffering or anguish. Each of his creations is entirely unique, varying in both the type of wood used and the size, which can range from 30 centimeters to over 2 meters in height.
Throughout his career, Bernard has been an active member of various artists' associations, including those focused on painting and sculpture in Agde and sculpture in Narbonne. He has also exhibited his work extensively, both individually and as part of group exhibitions, showcasing his sculptures in locations such as Guyana, Cher, Aude, Hérault, and Gard since 1990.
Bernard's sculptures are characterized by their symbolism and social commentary, reflecting his personal perception of the world and his engagement with current events and historical myths. His work addresses a wide range of themes, from societal issues such as the Rwandan genocide, women's alienation, immigration, and ecology to more existential topics like death, religion, and the creation of art and music.
Currently, Bernard maintains an exhibition space at his home, where he displays approximately seventy of his sculptures, inviting viewers to explore the depth and diversity of his artistic expression.
