Adeline Plane,
You will find on the site its traveling workshops for children in France, Senegal, and India.
Interview with Adeline Plane (May 2004) (her name in Tibetan is Tenzin Dolma)
Why did you go to meet children from around the world to have them draw?
Because I believe deep in my heart that the wonders of the world are other people. I truly believe deep in my heart that it is by knowing others, their ways of living, their differences in their ways of speaking, eating, drawing... that we become happier. When you only look at her little navel, I don't see anything interesting. If I spend my days looking at my navel or that of others who look like me, who are the same color, the same size... well, I'm bored...! So that’s why I’m going to look elsewhere! That's why I'm going to discover the wonders of the world!
What equipment did you bring with you?
I brought large pots of acrylic paints, the primary colors, and felt-tip pens of all sizes and colors, and colored pencils too. All this I had collected, it had been given to me and I also bought some. I took all my equipment when I went to Africa, but in India I only took half because it was heavy to carry and I have a friend who brought some back to the north of the country. 'India, because I knew he was going there, and I had given it to him before I left. I then left all the material little by little in the poorest schools.
On what themes did you make the children draw and why?
The themes were: their mother, their house, their favorite food, an animal, a tree, joy. I chose themes that all children in the world knew and could draw or invent and then draw. That way, too, it's easier afterwards, when I compare them. And I wanted relatively broad themes so that they could "go wild" a little. !!!
Which countries have you visited?
For my traveling workshop? Senegal, and India, and France, but in India, I also worked with Tibetan refugee children in India. It was very rich, very different, and very interesting!
How did you travel?
I took local means of transport, rickshaws, tuk-tuks, decorated buses, very slow trains, old colorful taxis...
Did you go to schools? Have you ever had a...
