My ideas... Where do they come from? From the sunshine, from the moment, from air... It was exactly what happened to me one morning of the lockdown period in Paris. I opened my eyes, saw the magical light coming from behind my curtain and started making self portraits, probably amusing my neighbours:) I managed to do that in spite of the backache I was suffering from at the moment. I probably could have called this series “Backache” but I didn’t…

This was the beginning of the story… Then I continued it with a male model who accepted to perform his show behind the curtain. I’m really grateful to him for sharing his artistic skills and emotions with me!

This series of photos reflects my vision of reality with lots of stress and pressure which envelope our days. The freedom and the lack of it, the doubts and suppressed desires that scream: LET ME OUT!!!

Anna Shumanskaia is a  professional photographer. . For her, photography is a profession, a vision, a risk, an experiment, a transformation, a way of life, a choice, and so on. But, first and foremost, it is her great passion, fueled by the arts, theater, music, and nature. For her, it's a choice between relaying a true narrative and making up one. It is up to the observer to make a decision about how to interpret it.

One of her most important principles is identity. She seeks it out and conveys it in her images, such as portraits of people dressed in potato sacks, naked bodies emerging from the water, or those painted in their emotions.

Anna Shumanskaia was born in Pyatigorks, Russia, on May 31, 1974, into a family of teachers, artists, and actresses. Her childhood was immersed in an artistic milieu influenced by the beauty of her locality, which is encircled by the Caucasus Mountains, as well as the paintings of her father and grandfather. She studied photography at "Photoplay" in Moscow after earning her Master's Degree in Linguistics in Russia. She relocated to Paris in 2015 to study French and complete her Master's degree in photography at Spéos (Paris Photographic Institute). She has participated in various individual and group exhibits in France and Greece since then.
