The constructive spirit
As revealing as this rise is the permanence in all the great cultures of the constructivist processes, as part of common life, in media as dissimilar as tapestry, architecture, ceramics and painting. The peoples of Africa make particularly vigorous use of abstract definition, for example in the mural decoration of the facades, in clearly coherent sequences and destined for a celebratory or exaltation purpose. Auguste Herbin (France, 1882/1960) makes the most of this dynamism and incidentally captures its vitalist sense, more than the formalist sense of other European experiences. The work of the Venezuelan Arturo Carrión (Maturín, 1953) has been consistent in the exploration of the abstract universe in two and three dimensions, with a guiding principle that starts, according to a text by the artist, from the principle that “art is enough on its own”. himself” and has a realistic character to represent the vital synthesis that man seeks and raises as a testimony of his action on earth.

Thus we find an alternative position. The realism sought by the great pioneers such as Naum Gabò (1890/1977) who formulated in his "realist manifesto" the need to leave behind the "hieratic rhythms" and give art life and true movement. Carrión takes advantage of the flexibility of the structure in his two-dimensional works, trying most of the time to lean on a strong, contrasting color, provocative of an equally rhythmic reading. In the works deployed in space, the incorporation of color is a timely resource to accentuate the game of shapes and volumes; not to mention that it also takes advantage of the free, real movement of the parts. The work is a constructive program, in which the artist tries to add the chromatic and formal elements necessary to create processes that reveal a condition of exaltation, a kind of celebration of the living and the beauty of the art of creating.
