View allOver the years I have moved from brighter to lighter colors from gross to subtle aspects of paintings.
My art is reflective above the systems and cycles that are fundamental to our lives. I find that we tend to organize our ideas and behavior into systems that are known as patterns.
The scriptural writing from Sanskrit or AUM an integral part of my works, AUM is the primordial sound of which the whole universe consists; we are made of music... The patterns I use in my art reflect my perceptions of the course of my on life as well as human behavior. These patterns are often used upon simple geometric forms and structures.
Circles, squares, spirals, spontaneous lines etc. are so basic. They frequently show up in my artwork. I use them to create rhythm. It’s the play between rhythms and ideas that interest me. By using these basic elements I am able to create an art that builds a framework of my ideas.
Over the years the patterns I have used have evolved considerably. I now approach patterns almost like I approach colors. I search for the right match to the form. I am more concerned with the rhythms of the painting.
My focus has always been abstract art. I am attracted to its total freedom of formulation. Abstract takes more than seeing – its takes contemplation. To see beyond what is seen.
It’s amazing to note how you invent yourself with each new body of work. I want the work to be in a state of becoming, to be open to receive the unexpected.

Antar Vartan is the March 2006 Artist of the Month.
Antar Vartan is the March 2006 Artist of the Month. Antar was born as Jitendra in Gujarat, India. In art college he excelled in lithography and drawing. Being a rebel by nature, he experimented with different techniques. He painted on large canvases. He burnt plywood. Once a whole lot of his paintings got burnt in this process.
He took Osho’s Sanyas and moved to Osho’s Pune Commune. His Sanyas name was Swami Antar Vartan. His friends call him Vartan. For over a year Vartan worked at the paintings in the Ashram. A number of exhibitions took place around this time at the Commune. Later he moved to “Mystic Village” in the nearby mountains. Here he lived close to Mother Nature. He hardly spoke around this time. Three years latter he returned to a normal life. He came out spiritually strong and vibrant.
Vartan dives into his painting, flows with it, lives with it; this has been his approach towards his painting. Vartan’s bold abstraction and free brush strokes epitomize spontaneity in a grand scale. He is a master of composition: his paintings emanate a wild energy from what at first appears to be a free, unconstrained and even chaotic form, but a closer inspection reveals a structured dynamic of tranquility and turbulence. His paintings are frequently anchored by a simple yet elegant geometric shape or a region of serene, radiant negative space. Around the anchors there is unceasing motion.
