Viaggio in Italia (1954, directed by Roberto Rossellini). A drama film, which is considered to be Rossellini's masterpiece about a disconnected couple from England visiting Naples, as their unfamiliar and enforced intimacy starts eating away at the fabric of their union. As a motion picture it is a powerful and emotional portrait of a time and a place rooted in existential melancholia. Turning this film into a painting was inevitable. The contrast between games of anger and jealousy depicted in the first half of the film, and the realization of the shortness of human life in the second half, the contrast between being withheld by the past and dreading the unknowable future is, in fact, the great contrast between life and death itself. This is exactly what motivates artists, excites people and changes the world, one day at a time.
