'beFOR ELYSium' (Für Elise) = The title references the tune.

'Before Elysium' is an interactive, sound generating, mechanical sculpture that employs music box combs and cylinders to play Beethoven's 'Für Elise' simultaneously at several times faster than normal, backwards, and at normal speed. The piece also generates a tinkling sound that references rain and waves using a form inspired by rain-sticks which are traditional instruments thought to have originated in Chile.

I've had the idea to make a rain machine bouncing around in my head for many years. I was thinking about the cyclical nature of machines and how they create rhythm, I was thinking about how structured noise becomes music. The sound of pouring rain set to a rhythm becomes the sound of ocean waves, the sound of a few raindrops are like individual notes of music. I've always loved 'Für Elise', it's most recognizable run of notes always makes me think of rain turning into music so I decided to integrate it into my machine. 'Before Elysium', inspired by the sound of rain, of waves, and the noise inside seashells, is the first of what will be an ambitious endeavor to create twenty-four related sculptures intended to be shown together in an exhibition titled 'Time Will Tell'.

The cyclical nature of the machine and the experience of a passing moment while interacting with (becoming a part of) the piece brings time into focus. As I thought about how time informed the work, I began to imagine a huge span of time reaching back before Elysium. In that distant time, people listened to the sound of rain and the rhythm of waves. In that time there was music and all the notes to 'Für Elise' existed but had yet to given the shape of the tune we now know. Reconstructing/deconstructing the notes is my way of blurring the lines between the rain/waves and music, it's an attempt to turn those most famous of notes into rain or vice versa. This piece is the first of twenty-four sound machines in a series called 'Time Will Tell'.

Kristopher is een hedendaagse Amerikaanse kunstenaar wiens werk, waaronder schilderijen, kunst aan de muur en beeldhouwwerken, op grote schaal is tentoongesteld in solo- en groepstentoonstellingen in heel New England en is opgenomen in zowel particuliere als openbare collecties. In april 2022 werd Kristopher uitgenodigd om lid te worden van de Silvermine Guild of Artists in New Canaan CT. Zijn werk heeft talloze prijzen ontvangen, waaronder: 2022 - Eervolle vermelding in de 13e Abstracts Art Exhibition van Light Space Time Gallery (Verenigde Staten). 2022 - Finalist in de 4e PORTRAIT Art Competition van Art Show International Gallery (internationaal). 2021 - 1e plaats algemeen. Kristopher volgde het kunstprogramma aan het Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, waar hij zijn BFA behaalde met een concentratie in beeldhouwkunst (cum laude afstuderen en een departementale onderscheiding in kunst ontvangen). Vervolgens schreef hij zich in voor het postdoctorale beeldhouwprogramma aan de Washington University in St. Louis, MO, waar hij zijn MFA behaalde. Op school ontwikkelde Kristopher zijn interesse en vaardigheden in hout- en metaalbewerking. Na zijn afstuderen verhuisde hij naar Atlanta, GA, waar hij werkte als metaalfabrikant. Met deze ervaring verhuisde Kristopher naar zijn thuisstaat Connecticut om een bedrijf te starten dat artistieke meubels ontwerpt en maakt. Hij runde zijn bedrijf tot 2009, toen hij besloot zijn meubelwinkel te sluiten om zich uitsluitend op zijn levensdoel te concentreren: kunst maken.

Kristopher's artistieke focus verschuift tussen verschillende series, waaronder interactieve beeldhouwkunst, muursculptuur, abstracte schilderkunst en allegorische schilderkunst, allemaal conceptueel verbonden door thema's die direct of indirect verband houden met of geïnspireerd zijn door de natuur. Via een doorlopende reeks allegorische schilderijen, waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van symboliek en satire, onderzoekt Kristopher thema's van de aantasting van het milieu als gevolg van menselijke activiteit. Hij onderzoekt de gevolgen van onze relatie met de natuurlijke wereld, waarin we onszelf boven en buiten de natuur hebben geplaatst, in de zin van dat we er intrinsiek mee verbonden zijn.

In zijn abstracte schilderkunst en wandsculptuur gebruikt hij kleur, vorm, lijn, materiaal en compositie op expressieve wijze om suggestieve, visueel meeslepende werken te creëren.

Momenteel concentreert Kristopher zich op de ontwikkeling van een beeldenreeks met de titel 'Time Will Tell', die uiteindelijk vierentwintig, interactieve, geluidsgenererende, mechanische sculpturen zal omvatten. De sculpturen zullen individueel variëren in schaal en materiaal, maar ze zullen allemaal het geluid van regen voortbrengen. De sculpturen in de serie 'Time Will Tell' roepen vragen op over technologie, nut, doel en onze relatie tot de natuur.
