These paper paintings are living creatures. I model these forms of life, involving images of their existence, taken with an electron microscope. The paintings are assembled from a large number of «hairs» made of paper, glue and acrylic. А hair growing on the skin is usually a sign of a living being. Likewise, my canvases are covered with hundreds and thousands of «hair» growing from them. I have always been inspired by the origin of life, its features, what it is or what it could be.

Exiguum (eng. “a little”) is a series of miniatures in transition: from flat to slightly sculptured surfaces. I took inspiration from looking at the simplest forms of life captured with an electron microscope and then transferred them to my canvases. Sometimes they are quite portrait, sometimes I give myself a lot of freedom creating them. The two-dimensional space is not enough for me, I need to bring each of my canvases into three-dimensional space and I do it by combining different textures and using paper tendrils.
The artworks are made in my author's technique combining acrylic paste and paper. Thus, the paintings have a relief surface with pile (hair) fragments and tendrils.

These paintings were created during a difficult period of my life: when I have had to leave my home and emigrated. A friend of mine gave me a place to live and to work, so I had something like a small studio on his balcony in Turkey. It was a hard time for creating with 40 degrees heat outside. It was challenging to overcome myself but nevertheless I felt motivated, and make these artworks.
My paintings are living beings. It is important for me to endow them with the characteristics of a living organism. The hair, as if it is growing from the surface of the canvas, allows you to perceive the artwork as a three-dimensional object. The hairy fragments animate the painting, empower it with tactility and sensitivity to the world. Like simple organisms that do not have eyes, but have villi, can understand the world around them.

Biography
Gleb Skubachevsky, a contemporary Russian painter, underwent a transformative phase in his artistic journey while studying in the studio of Aidan Salakhova and Sergey Ossovsky at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V.I. Surikov. Under their mentorship, Gleb's unique artistic concept began to take shape, marking a significant turning point in his art biography.
Exploring the possibilities of materials and pushing the boundaries of reference, Gleb Skubachevsky ventured into creating expansive canvases. In 2015, he further expanded his repertoire at the Dukley European Art Community, where he developed a distinctive technique at the intersection of painting and plasticity. Utilizing ornate, fragile volumes of paper mounted on a wooden frame, his artworks transcend the two-dimensional plane without sacrificing the essence of pictorial abstraction.
Gleb Skubachevsky's artistic exploration extends beyond the confines of his studio, as he actively participates in numerous art residencies worldwide. Collaborating with talented artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, he absorbs their works and concepts, contributing to his ongoing education and understanding of different cultures. The artist remains in a perpetual state of search, continually seeking new creative ideas and techniques, evolving from large canvases to intricate objects and sculptures.
Recognition followed in 2016 when Gleb entered the Top 100 list of recognized young Russian artists, according to INART magazine. He also boasts two UNESCO awards for his participation in art symposiums—Patras Art Fair and the Athina Art Fair.

Operating within the paradigm of metamodernism, Gleb Skubachevsky seeks a delicate balance between experimental form and material, between clarity and ambiguity. His works, simultaneously alien and familiar, exude extreme fragility and aggression. I'm moving on with the new series. This is already the second work paper on paper, absolutely white. I'm thinking over the mounting and framing method.
All artworks in the «Alien Creatures» series are made with/on Bockingford paper Grain Fin 300g/m2.

I started the «Creation of the World» series on October 22, 2023 on the first blank canvas 150 x 120 cm. God created everything in 6 days (and had a day of rest), as for me, after 6 months I’m only in the middle of the process and I don't even dream about resting. Let’s see 6 months of my work in 13 seconds.

Day 3: «God separated land and sea. He caused the dry land to appear. God also created vegetation on the third day».
