As I've developed as a sculptor I've been increasingly drawn to sculpt larger pieces, particularly in a rough texture as I feel this engages the imagination far more. That said, I chose to create this Buffalo bust in a very realistic style so that I could capture a high level of detail particularly in the horns, skin and eyes.
The horns vary substantially from one animal to the next but generally what one is looking for is the spread of the horns, how low they drop and how they curl. These features together with the 'boss' which is the large thick section on top of the head are all indicators of great genes and age.
As everyone knows, Cape Buffalo are one of Africas 'Big 5' most dangerous to hunt animals.
Cape Buffalo are notoriously tough, calculating and vindictive and it has been said that an angry buffalo looks at you like you owe him money. They raise the head high and stare down the nose at you and so I have tried to capture all of these features in this sculpture.
It is mounted on a Rhodesian teak base but this can obviously be changed.

Brandon Borgelt is a self-taught contemporary sculptor from South Africa. He spent many years delving into his passion for nature and creativity in varied ways such as working at game reserves and filming nature documentaries. Finally in 2000, he started sculpting in bronze.

When he took his first tentative steps with this medium, he found that kneading, pressing and forming the clay seemed to come naturally, and soon realized that this was the perfect way to channel creative energy. Using his hands to bring life to a three dimensional figure felt far more natural than trying to create an illusion of three dimensions on paper. Borgelt has merged his passions seamlessly to create brilliantly detailed bronze sculptures that capture the essence of his subject, which are African wildlife animals and nude.

Brandon Borgelt was born in 1966, in Johannesburg.
